FARMING
ORGANIZATIONS

We cultivate a new generation of farmers and food leaders, and develop viable employment and meaningful careers through the collaboration of the farming and military communities. We believe that veterans possess the unique skills and character needed to strengthen rural communities and create sustainable food systems. We believe that agriculture offers purpose, opportunity, and physical and psychological benefits.

Hawthorne Valley Association is a diverse nonprofit 501(c)3 organization committed to social and cultural renewal through the integration of education, agriculture, and the arts. Our farm is part of the same non-profit association as the Hawthorne Valley School, an early childhood through grade 12 Waldorf school that is nestled within our campus, across the street from our farm store and milking barn. Students from the school visit and work on the farm as part of their curriculum.

At Stone Barns Center, we use resilient, regenerative farming practices to grow seasonal, regionally appropriate food. Our highly integrated methods of composting and crop and animal rotations enrich soils and their ability to produce nutritious food.  These methods contribute to a dynamic, self-renewing system of farming that doesn’t need chemical fertilizers, pesticides or other artificial input.
